Iran Foreign Students: In a major relief for foreign nationals, including Indians, Iran has permitted students enrolled in its universities to leave through land borders as tensions escalate across the West Asia region. According to Tasnim News, Tehran’s science ministry confirmed that students can exit via neighbouring countries while term-end examinations and doctoral thesis defences will be rescheduled.
The move comes as universities and public institutions remain temporarily shut and Iran’s airspace stays closed to international flights. Indian authorities have repeatedly advised students to leave, but logistical challenges and flight suspensions have complicated the evacuation. Students in Tehran, Urmia, and other regions report limited access to hospitals and essential services, while the Indian embassy continues coordinating evacuation through Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Why Were Students Stranded In Iran?
Students were stranded due to escalating regional tensions, the closure of Iran’s airspace to international flights, and the temporary shutdown of universities and public institutions for 15 days.
Tehran has allowed foreign students to exit via land borders and assured that term-end examinations and doctoral thesis defences will be conducted later on announced dates.
Students reported internet blackouts, hearing bomb sounds every 15 minutes, missile sightings in Urmia, and suspension of hospitals and universities, creating tense and disturbing conditions.
The Indian embassy is in constant contact, guiding students toward the Armenia and Azerbaijan borders, coordinating buses with universities, and planning further evacuation steps amid ongoing restrictions.
