Kerala revised school textbooks: The Preamble to the Constitution will be included in the revised school textbooks for the first time in the state of Kerala, according to General Education Minister V Sivankutty. "There will be activities intended for children to imbibe it as part of the curriculum," he said.
As part of a thorough curriculum revision for classes I, III, V, VII, and IX, the State School Curriculum Steering Committee granted approval to 173 textbook titles. The remaining classes will receive updated textbooks in preparation for the academic year 2025-26.
"At the national level, Kerala is the state that completes curriculum reform activities quickly. When anti-democratic practices take place in the country, academically and otherwise, we have tried to fight it academically. We will continue to do that. From the very beginning, we have announced that Kerala will pursue reforms that uphold constitutional values," said Minister V Sivankutty.
"Sports, waste problems, cleanliness, civic awareness, gender awareness based on equal justice, scientific awareness, POCSO rules, agriculture, democratic values, secularism are part of the textbooks. 5 to 10 class students will be provided with vocational education. This will include tourism, agriculture, IT, textile and skill development. It will help to develop a work attitude in children from a young age," the Minister added.
Commending the decision of the state government, senior Left Leader and former finance minister T M Thomas Isaac expressed that it signifies the state's stance against efforts to "communalise education."
"The revised school textbooks of Kerala will include Preamble to the Constitution. The curriculum will be gender sensitive. Lessons on Pocso rules, democratic and secular values and scientific temperament will be included. That's our response to the attempts to communalise education," he said in his handle on social media platform 'X'.
