Kerala Heavy Rain Alert: Kozhikode and Wayanad districts have declared a holiday for educational institutions on Thursday, July 9, 2026, as heavy rainfall continues to affect several parts of Kerala and weather authorities warn of more rain ahead. The closures come as a precautionary measure amid persistent rain and waterlogging.
District administrations said the decision is aimed at ensuring the safety of students and staff as the southwest monsoon remains active across northern Kerala, even as university and PSC examinations will proceed as scheduled with no change to the timetable.
What's Closed In Kozhikode And Wayanad?
In Wayanad, the holiday applies broadly, covering schools, anganwadis, religious study classes, madrasas, tuition centres, special classes and professional colleges, according to the District Collector's official announcement.
However, residential schools and residential colleges are exempt and will continue functioning unless separate instructions are issued. Kozhikode has similarly announced a school holiday for July 9 as rain and waterlogging persist across the district.
Will Exams Be Affected?
No. University examinations and Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) examinations will be held as scheduled, with no change in the examination timetable despite the school and college closures. Candidates appearing for these exams are expected to attend as per their original schedule, regardless of the holiday declared for regular educational institutions.
What Does The IMD Alert Say?
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod for July 9, indicating the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall. The IMD defines heavy rainfall as 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours, and has warned that intense spells of rain in a short duration could trigger waterlogging, flash floods, overflowing streams, landslides and mudslides, particularly in hilly and low-lying regions.
What Should Residents Do?
Residents have been advised to remain cautious and follow official weather advisories as rain continues across the state.
Parents and students are advised to monitor announcements from district administrations for further updates on school holidays, weather alerts or any changes in local conditions over the coming days.
