Kerala Schools Declare Holiday:
In a proactive measure to ensure the safety of students, authorities across Kerala have declared a holiday for schools in eight districts today, June 27, 2025. This decision comes in response to the incessant heavy rainfall lashing the state and the severe weather alerts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). As several regions brace for extremely heavy downpours and gusty winds, the closures aim to prevent any potential risks to students commuting to and from educational institutions.
The holiday encompasses both government and private schools, with local reports confirming closures in Ernakulam, Kottayam, Thrissur, Idukki, Wayanad, Palakkad, Pathanamthitta, and Nilambur taluk in Malappuram district. This widespread action underscores the gravity of the weather situation, as authorities prioritize public safety, particularly for the younger population, amidst the escalating rain intensity.
Districts Implement Varied Closures
District Collectors have issued specific directives tailored to their local conditions, impacting various types of educational institutions. In Ernakulam, an Orange Alert prompted the District Collector to announce a comprehensive holiday, extending to all schools, professional colleges, Anganwadis, and even tuition centres. Kottayam, while ordering the closure of most educational institutions, made an exception for those conducting pre-scheduled examinations, demonstrating a balance between safety and academic continuity. Additionally, all mining activity in Kottayam has been temporarily halted until June 30 as a precautionary measure.
Thrissur followed suit, declaring a holiday across all educational boards, though it clarified that pre-scheduled exams or interviews would proceed without change. Idukki's directive was more specific, with only non-residential institutions observing the holiday. Wayanad ordered the closure of both schools and colleges, but residential schools and ongoing examinations were permitted to continue. In Palakkad, schools, tuition centres, and Anganwadis are shut, while professional colleges are operating as usual. Lastly, in Nilambur taluk, Malappuram, all schools, including Buds and Madrasas, are closed, with the exception of exam centres and hostels.
IMD Alerts and Broader Impact:
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued critical weather alerts, underscoring the severity of the situation. A Red Alert has been declared for Idukki, Malappuram, and Wayanad for June 27, warning of isolated incidents of extremely heavy rainfall. This highest level of alert indicates a need for immediate action and heightened vigilance. Furthermore, several other districts across Kerala remain under Orange and Yellow Alerts through June 29, signifying expectations of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
The continuous monitoring of weather patterns and timely issuance of these alerts are crucial for public safety and disaster preparedness. The broader impact of these rains extends beyond school closures, as seen in Kottayam's decision to halt mining activity until June 30, emphasizing the need for comprehensive safety measures during adverse weather conditions.
