Maharashtra Day 2026: It celebrates the day when the state was officially formed after the division of the old Bombay State. People across the state celebrate it with several events and cultural programmes, with Mumbai grading all the limelight. Every year at Dadar's Shivaji Park a parade is organized in the presence of the government officials, police, and other dignitaries. To honour the traditions and folk culture of the state, many cultural programs are held.
Maharashtra Day 2026: Historical Background
Maharashtra was formed on May 1, 1960, after a long struggle known as the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement. This movement demanded a separate state for Marathi-speaking people. On May 1, 1960, the bilingual Bombay State was divided into Maharashtra and Gujarat. This historical milestone is celebrated as Maharashtra Diwas.

As per the state holiday guidelines, Maharashtra Day is a public holiday across the state. All major government offices, public institutions, schools, and colleges remain closed today.
