JE Education Desk: The IMD issued a "red alert" for the city on Wednesday, prompting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to proclaim July 27 as a holiday for all government and private schools and colleges. On Wednesday night, Iqbal Singh Chahal, the BMC's administrator and municipal commissioner, released a statement regarding it.
"In view of the red alert issued for Mumbai, the BMC has declared a holiday for all municipal, government-run and private primary, secondary and higher secondary schools and all colleges in the city and suburbs on Thursday as safety of students is a top priority," the statement said.
For Mumbai city and its surrounding areas, the IMD Mumbai issued an "extremely heavy rainfall" warning (red alert) from 8 p.m. on July 26 to the afternoon on July 27. The BMC urges that all residents remain vigilant, stay inside, and graciously abide by administrative directives, Chahal said.

IMD officials emphasized that the weather department's "red alert" will be valid until 8.30 am, contrary to what the BMC had previously stated. On Wednesday, Mumbai was pummeled by relentlessly heavy rain, which slowed down the flow of traffic.
Between 8 am and 4 pm, the city received 61.19 mm of rain, while the eastern and western suburbs saw 34.53 mm and 40.68 mm of rain, respectively. While the island city experienced sporadic heavy showers in the afternoon, the intensity of the rain was greater in the suburbs in the morning.
