NCERT's New Assessment Scheme: Withdrawing from the traditional method of assessment in schools where the primary focus has been on year-end examinations, NCERT's standard-setting body PARAKH, has devised a Holistic Progress Card (HPC). According to a report published by The Indian Express, HPC will evaluate students' performance based on feedback from parents, classmates, and even self-evaluation.

Through this method, PARAKH seeks to monitor not just students' academic achievements, but also their cognitive, socio-emotional skills, and creativity demonstrated in classroom activities. The criteria for assessing students will cover aspects such as self-awareness, interpersonal relationships, problem-solving capabilities, emotional intelligence, and creative skills.

How Will The Holistic Progress Card (HPC) Access Students?

PARAKH has devised an evaluative framework that encourages active student participation, focusing on various aspects of learning, including diverse skills and competencies.

The Holistic Progress Card (HPC) is tailored for different educational stages: foundational (Classes 1 and 2), preparatory (Classes 3 to 5), and middle (Classes 6 to 8). Plans are underway to develop a similar evaluation scheme for secondary education. The report card will incorporate feedback from parents, classmates, and self-evaluation. Parental input will assess students' ability to complete homework, engage in classroom lessons, and balance screen time with extracurricular activities. Classmates' feedback will evaluate students' ability to engage in learning tasks.

NCERT has instructed all states to align their evaluation methods with the HPC, allowing schools to either adopt or adapt it. This initiative aligns with the recommendations of the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE), aiming to make evaluations more learner-centric. In accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the HPC aims to enhance students' self-awareness and self-esteem by leveraging their strengths and addressing areas for improvement.
