New Curriculum Framework: Students in grades 9 and 10 will be required to study three languages, which include two Indian native languages. For students in grades 11 and 12, the curriculum mandates studying one Indian language along with another language, as per the guidelines of the New Curriculum Framework (NCF). The NCF was formulated in accordance with the new National Education Policy (NEP) under the guidance of the national steering committee, led by former ISRO chief K Kasturirangan.
Currently, students in classes 9 and 10 are required to study two languages, while those in classes 11 and 12 study one language. So far, students from grades 9 to 12 are required to study five subjects, with the option of adding one additional subject. Following the NCF's suggestions, the compulsory subjects will increase to seven for classes 9 to 10 and six for classes 11 to 12.
''Language across stages will help students develop democratic and epistemic values, and dispositions of respect for culture and diversity in society ('cultural literacy'),'' said the NCF document accessed by news agency PTI.
''Learning more than one language will broaden students' horizons and learning another Indian language will enable a deeper connection with the country and develop a sense of pride and belonging to the country,'' it added.
According to the curriculum framework outlined in NCF for classes 9 and 10, all educational institutions are required to provide three languages, with a minimum of two languages being indigenous to India. ''Apart from the three languages, students are to study seven other subjects from the groupings of mathematics and computational thinking, social science, science, art education, physical education and well-being, vocational education, and interdisciplinary areas. 'However, board exams will be conducted for seven subjects, including the languages, while for art education, physical education and well-being, vocational education the mode of assessment will be an internal exam with the external examiner,'' the document stated.
At present, it is compulsory for students in classes 11 and 12 to study just one language. ''For classes 11 and 12, students need to study two subjects from Language Education (called Group 1), at least one of which must be a language native to India. Literature subjects are also contained in Language Education at this level,'' the document added.
