Theme For International Literacy Day 2026

This year, International Literacy Day 2026 is being celebrated with the theme, “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity.” The day focuses on the need to track progress continuously and understand the persistent challenges that come in the course of becoming literate, and shape future literacy agendas in a rapidly changing world.

India’s Education Systems Have Made Major Changes

Over the past five years, under the National Education Policy (NEP 2020), major changes have been made across the Indian education system. The NIPUN Bharat Mission has been rolled out to achieve foundational literacy and numeracy for all children, while several states have been running cluster models to support decentralised planning.

As mentioned in the NITI Aayog 2026 report, titled “School Education System in India: Temporal Analysis and Policy Roadmap for Quality Enhancement”, India has made significant progress in several areas, including school infrastructure, internet usage, computer literacy, and smart class facilities. Despite this, disparities persist among regions. More than one-third of  schools still lack computers, and over one-third of schools remain without internet connectivity. According to the UDISE+ Report 2024-25, the Indian education system is one of the largest in the world, with more than 14.71 lakh schools and nearly 24.69 crore students.

Global Literacy Rate 2026

The global literacy rate stands at approximately 88% among adults and 93% among youth, as per the UNESCO Institute for Statistics’ 2026 education data. This highlights that universal literacy has not been achieved yet, even though literacy has improved considerably over the decades. The remaining gap can be understood because the literacy gap overlaps with the challenges of poverty, unequal access to education, gender disparities, conflict, and other social and economic challenges.

Here are key figures noted under the Global Literacy Rate 2026:

1. Adult literacy rate: About 88%

2. Youth literacy rate: About 93%

3. Adults without basic literacy skills: Around 739 million

4. Women among adults lacking basic literacy skills: About two-thirds
