Upon approval of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), the National Medical Commission (NMC), the 1st Appeal Committee of the NMC, and the 2nd Appeal Committee of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), additional seats have been added. New medical colleges, alongside existing colleges, have been permitted to increase the annual intake of candidates for MBBS.
Following this, 13,186 additional MBBS seats have been added, bringing the total to 1,40,214 seats across 836 medical colleges. Of the new seats, 2,786 have been added across 445 government medical colleges, taking the total to 63,971. Meanwhile, 10,400 have been added across 391 private medical colleges, taking their total to 76,243.
Karnataka Gets The Highest Seats
After the addition of the new seats, Karnataka now has the highest number of seats across states. 1,650 additional MBBS seats have been added taking the overall MBBS seat count to 15,745 across 76 medical colleges. Tamil Nadu follows with 1,250 additional seats, taking its total to 14,299. In the list, Bihar stands at third position with 1,240 additional seats, while Uttar Pradesh has added 1,200 seats. However, no seats have been added for Delhi, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
Furthermore, NMC has stated that the revised seat matrix is not necessarily final and is subject to change if required. Any subsequent decision by the Appeal Committee or the concerned authority may result in a change of the seat matrix. Therefore, candidates are advised to check the latest seat matrix before filling in their college preferences during the NEET UG counselling 2026.
Colleges Must Verify Details
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has asked all medical colleges to verify their institutional details in the updated seat matrix for 2026-27. In case of any discrepancy in the name, approved seat intake, or other details, colleges must immediately contact the President or Director, MARB, for examination and appropriate action.
NMC Issues Directions to Counselling Committees
The NMC has cautioned the medical colleges against admitting students beyond the approved seat matrix. Such decisions will be flagged and will come under non-compliance with the provisions of the National Medical Commission Act, 201. Subsequent penal action may take place against it. For the academic year 2026-27, admissions must be made only against seats that have been approved and notified by the MARB, as amended from time to time.
