Union Minister of State for Ayush (Independent Charge), Shri Prataprao Jadhav, announced that the National Exit Test (NExT) for Ayush students will be implemented starting with the 2021-2022 batch onwards. The announcement was made during a press conference in the national capital.

This decision follows the recommendations of an expert committee formed to address student concerns. The committee proposed that NExT should apply to students enrolled in the 2021-2022 academic session under the NCISM and NCH Acts, 2020, thereby clarifying any uncertainties about its implementation.

NExT will be required for licensing and registration in state or national medical registers after the completion of a one-year internship. The exam will feature problem-based assessments, including clinical case scenarios, images, and videos to test practical skills, according to an official statement.

Interns who pass NExT before completing their internship will be eligible for registration with state or national medical boards only after completing the mandatory one-year internship.

What is NExT?

The concept of the National Exit Test (NExT) was first introduced in 2019 through the National Medical Commission Bill. NExT is designed to serve multiple purposes within the Indian medical education system.

The exam will act as a qualifying test for final-year MBBS students, while also granting a license to practice medicine in India. In addition, NExT will facilitate a merit-based admission process for students seeking to pursue postgraduate medical courses. This merit-based system aims to ensure that deserving candidates have equal opportunities to specialise in their chosen medical fields.
