School Holidays Today: Heavy rain in Maharashtra and several areas of India has led authorities to announce school holidays in various districts on September 17, 2025. There are several districts like Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Raigad, and Beed are still receiving heavy rain since September 14, 2025. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced orange alerts in such districts, schools remaining closed to ensure safety of students. Also, September 17 marks as a Vishwakarma Diwas and in various states of India there will be a huge celebration so schools will remain closed for that as well.
1. Maharashtra: Vishwakarma Diwas is an optional holiday in the calendars of Mumbai, Pune, and other cities. But few metropolitan schools might stay closed so that the students and teaching staff will be able to participate in the celebrations. In Maharashtra, a yellow alert has been issued for many districts. Parents have been asked to check the official school websites, stay in touch with authorities and local television channels for latest updates.
2. Telangana: September 17 is observed and celebrated as a Vishwakarma Puja in the state. While not a compulsory holiday, many schools, colleges and technical institutes will remain closed particularly in Hyderabad and industrial hubs.
3. Uttar Pradesh: The state of Uttar Pradesh has officially announced September 17, 2025 as a public holiday for the celebration of the Vishwakarma Puja. All the schools, banks, and several government offices will remain closed today. Students across the state can expect a holiday.
4. Punjab and Haryana: In Punjab and Haryana, September 17 marks as a Vishwakarma Jayanti and it is a restricted holiday. This implies that all the schools will be closed in select districts, especially those where there is a huge participation in the Puja celebrations. Official circulars are usually issued at the district level.
5. Eastern and North-Eastern States (West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Assam, Jharkhand, Tripura): Viswakarma Puja is celebrated with extreme devotion in these particular states of India. The communities built massive pandals and planned puja events, while schools, colleges, and many places of employment remained closed for the day. This is a frequently observed holiday for students.
Thus, all the schools and colleges will remain closed today September 17, 2025 in many states including Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Assam and Jharkhand. Maharashtra, Telangana, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana schools will also remain closed in selected areas.
