Setubandha Scheme:  India has taken a transformative step by launching the Setubandha Scholar Scheme, an initiative that invites scholars from traditional gurukuls into the academic ecosystem of prestigious IITs. Backed by the Ministry of Education and implemented by the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) division under the Central Sanskrit University, this scheme redefines inclusivity in higher education.

Setubandha is not just about research; it symbolises the formal recognition of ancient knowledge systems like the Shastras, Ayurveda, and classical grammar. For the first time, scholars with no conventional degrees but with five years of intensive Gurukul training can now participate in mainstream research programs, including cognitive science, architecture, and strategic studies.

What Is the Setubandha Scholar Scheme?

The Setubandha Scholar Scheme is India's first national-level initiative to merge ancient and modern knowledge systems at elite institutions like IITs. The scheme supports 18 interdisciplinary domains, from performing arts to political theory and mathematics to Ayurveda.

It eliminates the prerequisite of a formal degree, focusing instead on a scholar’s mastery in classical traditions and Shastras through Gurukul training.

Fellowships and Research Grants Offered

The scheme has two scholar categories:

1. Category 1 (PG level):  Rs 40,000/month + Rs 1 lakh/year for research.

2. Category 2 (PhD level): Rs 65,000/month + Rs 2 lakh/year.

This generous funding not only acknowledges traditional learning but empowers scholars to make meaningful contributions to contemporary academic inquiry and national development.

Eligibility and Age Criteria:

To apply, candidates must have:

1. A minimum of five years of study in a recognised Gurukul.

2. Demonstrated excellence in traditional knowledge or Shastras.

3. Must be 32 years or younger at the time of application.

This eligibility criteria ensures scholarly rigour while removing formal academic barriers, creating a new pathway into premier institutions.

Significance of the Scheme for India’s Education Policy:

The Setubandha Scholar Scheme is a direct outcome of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes Indian languages, ancient knowledge systems, and inclusive learning frameworks. By integrating gurukul-trained scholars into IITs, India is reclaiming and modernizing its intellectual heritage. The move also promotes interdisciplinary studies that blend tradition with science, policy, and technology.

This scheme not only preserves India’s ancient knowledge traditions but also strengthens its research ecosystem with diverse, indigenous perspectives. It's a bold step toward redefining what qualifies as merit in India's evolving academic landscape.
