Axiom Mission 4: Shubhanshu Shukla began his academic journey at City Montessori School (CMS), Aliganj Campus, in Lucknow. Deeply inspired by the Kargil War of 1998, he aspired to serve the nation through the armed forces. Without informing his parents, Shubhanshu decided to prepare for the Union Public Service Commission's NDA exam, which he successfully cracked. Academic Brilliance at NDA and Beyond:
After clearing the NDA entrance, Shubhanshu pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science at the National Defence Academy, completing it in 2005. His education was not just limited to academics—he underwent rigorous physical, technical, and leadership training. This well-rounded education built the foundation of his future role as a fighter pilot and space mission leader. He was later commissioned into the Indian Air Force in 2006.
Fighter Pilot and Early Military Career:
Shubhanshu Shukla received his formal flying training at the prestigious Indian Air Force Academy. Post-training, he was inducted into the fighter stream and began his operational career with the Indian Air Force. Unlike many who stop at a bachelor's degree, Shubhanshu continued his academic journey and pursued an MTech in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. IISc, which recently topped Asia’s Times Higher Education 2025 rankings and India's NIRF list, is renowned for its research excellence. His time at IISc sharpened his technical and scientific acumen—crucial for a space-bound officer.
Gaganyaan to Axiom Mission 4: Training for Space
In 2019, Shubhanshu was selected for India’s ambitious Gaganyaan Mission, which marked the start of his astronaut training. He underwent rigorous training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Russia and later at India’s Astronaut Training Facility in Bangalore. Completing these training programs in 2021, he became one of India's most prepared space professionals, eventually being chosen for the international Axiom Mission 4.
