Tamil Nadu School Holiday (5 December): Even as Cyclone Ditvaah weakened into a depression, it continues to wreak havoc in the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. The IMD has issued an orange alert for four districts on Thursday, December 4. Severe weather is expected in Tamil Nadu on Friday, December 5, with the northern coastal districts of the state being particularly rough. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely over North Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has placed 13 districts plus Puducherry on yellow alert for Thursday: Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvannamalai, Villuppuram, Nilgiris, ghat areas of Coimbatore, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Tenkasi.
While the Cyclone 'Ditwah' has passed, officials caution that localised heavy rain remains possible in the southern coastal belt.
Orange Alert issued for four districts:
In its Thursday morning update, the IMD placed Chennai under an Orange Alert, along with Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu. Later, the warning was scaled down to ‘Yellow’. These districts are likely to see light to moderate showers with thunderstorms and lightning.
Although reports suggest that schools and colleges in districts under the Orange Alert, including Chennai and Chengalpattu, may remain shut on Friday due to rain and waterlogging, official confirmation is still awaited from the respective district administrations.
Tamil Nadu School Holiday: Is There A Holiday For Schools and Colleges On December 5?
Local district administrations of the rain-hit districts had declared school closures on December 3 and 4 in the worst-affected pockets of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu.
Based on forecasts, schools are expected to reopen on Friday. However, with roads still in bad condition and flooding posing challenges for students travelling long distances, district authorities may still declare a holiday.
Parents should monitor official district bulletins and school communications; many colleges will remain open, but individual institutions may determine their own schedules.
