Tomorrow School Holiday: Cyclone Ditwah, which formed in the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjacent north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastal areas yesterday (30.11.2025), weakened into a deep depression yesterday and is prevailing in the same areas.
It moved slowly in a northerly direction and today (01.12.2025) morning, it is located in the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjacent west-central Bay of Bengal - North Tamil Nadu - Puducherry - South Andhra Pradesh coasts, about 50 km east-southeast of Chennai, 130 km northeast of Puducherry, 150 km northeast of Cuddalore and about 200 km south-southeast of Nellore.
At that time, the minimum distance from the center of the deep depression to the North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast was 40 km.
It is likely to move northwards along the coasts of North Tamil Nadu - Puducherry and South Andhra Pradesh during the next 12 hours and weaken into a low-pressure area and prevail over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal.
At that time, the minimum distance from Chennai may be 30 km. Due to this, light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning may occur at a few places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal areas today.
Meanwhile, a red alert warning has been issued for extremely heavy rain in Chennai and Tiruvallur districts today. It is noteworthy that while an orange alert was issued for Chennai and Tiruvallur in the morning, a red alert warning has been issued due to continuous rain.

Will Schools be closed in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry Today?
As Cyclonic Storm Ditwah approaches Chennai and makes landfall in Tamil Nadu, schools are expected to remain closed in Chennai and various parts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, December 2nd.
Following Chennai, schools and colleges in Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur districts have also been declared holiday tomorrow (Dec. 2). As heavy rain has been falling since this morning, the district administrations have issued an announcement. Furthermore, a holiday has been declared in Kanchipuram as the rain continues. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for these areas. Heavy rains are already lashing parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry as the cyclone approaches the Indian coastline. The storm emerged from Sri Lanka on Saturday afternoon, where it has killed at least 153 people and left 191 missing.
Under the influence of the cyclone, heavy to very heavy rainfall and extremely heavy rainfall are likely over Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur and Ranipet districts and at isolated places over Puducherry and Karaikal during the next 24 hours. Strong winds with speeds of 70-75 kmph, gusting up to 80 kmph, are likely over North Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
