The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) informed the education ministry that conducting board exams for classes 10 and 12 twice a year is not possible within the current academic schedule, according to officials familiar with the development. The board presented this information during a National Curriculum Framework 2023 program held on June 25 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The event was attended by numerous school principals affiliated with CBSE.

In line with the National Education Policy 2020, the framework released in August recommended allowing students to take board examinations at least twice a year, with only their best scores being considered. The ministry asked the board to outline a plan for conducting biannual board exams. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan indicated in February that the plan is expected to be implemented on an optional basis starting from the 2025–26 academic year, as reported by the Hindustan Times.

According to the board’s presentation reported by HT, conducting board exams for classes 10 and 12 in the current system involves over 150 steps. The process spans a minimum of 310 days, encompassing tasks such as candidate list preparation, center notifications, roll number issuance, practical exams, theory exams, result declaration, and verification and revaluation procedures. The board stated that at least 55 days are necessary to conduct both exams.

An official stated that it has schools spread across the world, hence, conducting board examinations in two shifts under the current system and policies is not possible.

The main examinations are usually held from February to April, with results announced in May. Supplementary exams, on the other hand, are conducted from July to August, with results released by the end of August. According to the board, a total of 88 subjects are examined for class 10 and 121 subjects for class 12.

“The issue of the date of competitive exams, holidays, and gaps between exams, are also taken into consideration at the time of the preparation of the date sheets… besides the timing of the conduct of practical exams are different for winter bound and summer bound schools,” the board said in its presentation.

“The NCF recommendation of introducing two board exams is to reduce the load and pressure of students. It is to give them another opportunity to improve their performance if they want. We will work out together on how to implement the NCF recommendations. The ministry has also asked the principals of CBSE schools to send their suggestions as well,” the official said, as reported by HT.
