In a landmark move for India’s higher education sector, the University of Liverpool has officially become the second UK university to receive a Letter of Intent (LoI) from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to establish a campus in India. The handover ceremony, held in New Delhi and presided over by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, marks a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to internationalize Indian education.

The new campus, set to open in Bengaluru in 2026, will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs in law, business, health sciences, computer science, and more, aiming to provide Indian students with world-class education aligned with both Indian and global standards.

The initiative is part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020’s vision to attract top foreign universities and improve India’s Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education. The University of Liverpool’s Bengaluru campus will also focus on research partnerships, industry collaboration, and global academic exchange, strengthening ties between India and the UK.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Tim Jones highlighted the university’s commitment to providing exceptional learning experiences and opportunities for employability, while British High Commissioner Lindy Cameron emphasized the importance of education in shaping future leaders and innovators.

Academic Programs and Unique Offerings at Liverpool’s Bengaluru Campus

The Bengaluru campus of the University of Liverpool will launch in 2026, offering a diverse range of programs in law, business, health sciences, computer science, accounting, finance, and biomedical sciences. Notably, it will be the first UK university in India to offer degrees in computer game design, reflecting Bengaluru’s status as India’s tech and innovation hub. The curriculum is designed to blend Indian and global educational standards, preparing students for international careers.

The university has already established partnerships with leading Indian institutions and multinational companies, ensuring strong industry connections and research collaboration. These initiatives aim to enhance students’ employability and contribute to the region’s knowledge economy.

Impact on Indian Higher Education and Global Collaboration

The University of Liverpool’s Bengaluru campus is set to transform India’s higher education landscape by providing Indian students access to world-class education without leaving the country. This move aligns with the National Education Policy 2020’s goal of increasing the Gross Enrolment Ratio and fostering global academic standards. The campus will also serve as a hub for research, innovation, and industry partnerships, benefiting both Indian and international students.

The presence of a leading UK university in India will strengthen academic collaboration, promote cultural exchange, and support India’s ambition to become a developed nation by 2047. The project underscores the growing partnership between India and the UK in education and research
