UK's Southampton University: The University of Southampton is the first UK university to be granted permission from the Indian government to establish a full campus in the country. This action represents an important turning point in the Indian education industry, as it aligns with the University Grants Commission's (UGC) ambition to allow the top 500 foreign universities to establish campuses in India.
Today, a letter of intent (LoI) was delivered to the University of Southampton, formally launching this relationship. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar attended the occasion and emphasized the importance of this breakthrough in light of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
"This reflects both the vision of elevating our educational standards to the highest global levels and delivering on the education pillar of India-UK cooperation," Dr Jaishankar stated.
"Confident that such endeavours will further make our youth world ready and foster a spirit of global understanding and cooperation," he further added.

The University of Southampton, one of the world's top 100 universities, will create a campus in the Delhi National Capital Region. This campus will emphasize education, research, information exchange, and entrepreneurial activity, combining Southampton's outstanding expertise with India's growing promise as a global education hub.
Mark E Smith, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Southampton, emphasised the significance of this effort.
"In the 21st century, no university can be truly global without engaging with India. We intend to establish a campus that delivers social value and economic impact to India and the university by bringing together Southampton's world-class activities in education, research, and knowledge exchange and enterprise, with all the talent of the rising global superpower that is India," he said.
He continued to say that the new campus would play an important role in advancing the Government of India's transformative goal by leveraging the potential of Indian youth.
Professor Andrew Atherton, vice-president for International and Engagement, stressed the university's role in fostering academic collaboration and enhancing India's higher education system.
"University of Southampton Delhi NCR will be the first comprehensive international campus in India. It will foster academic collaboration and bring an international dimension to the Indian higher education system, opening up opportunities to study for a top 100 degree in-country," he stated.
This development is regarded as a crucial step in achieving the NEP 2020 vision of 'internationalisation at home.' The Education Minister also praised the increased interest of internationally renowned higher education institutions (HEIs) in working with Indian universities and adding to India's future as a global education and talent powerhouse.
So yet, just two Australian universities—Deakin University and the University of Wollongong—have opened campuses in India, at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City. Furthermore, Malaysia's Lincoln Institution College was the first foreign institution to register with the UGC's dedicated webpage to construct a campus in India.
