India’s State Governors and UT Lieutenant Governors: In India, the Governor and Lieutenant Governors play a crucial role and serve as the constitutional head of the state. According to the Articles 153 to 162 of the Indian Constitution, the Governors are appointed by the president of India. Ensuring the proper functioning of the state according to constitutional provisions is the main responsibility of the Governors. Here we bring to you the complete and updated list of the Governors of the Indian States as well as Union Territories.
The Governor has the authority to appoint the Chief Minister, other ministers, the Advocate General, and the State Election Commissioners whereas Governors can also send a report to the President of India about the failure of the constitutional operations in the state. The Governor is considered as the nominal head of the state whereas the Chief Minister is considered as the real executive head. The bills passed by the State Legislature are required the Governor's permission to become a law. They can also reserve bills for the President's consideration.This article provides a state-wise and Union Territory-wise list of the Governors of India till August 2025.
