Uttarakhand: The State Council of Educational Research and Training has introduced a key change in the State Curriculum Framework, making mathematics compulsory for all students studying in Classes 9 and 10. The revision is part of the state’s alignment with the National Education Policy 2020.

Two-Level Maths Assessment Introduced For Students

Under the new framework, mathematics assessment will follow a two-level structure. Students will be able to choose between a general level and an advanced level, depending on their interest and learning capacity. The general level is meant for students who do not wish to pursue mathematics further, while the advanced level will support those planning higher studies in the subject. The change has been formally approved under the updated curriculum, officials confirmed.

Speaking on the development, State Council of Educational Research and Training Director Bandana Garbyal said the revision aims to balance flexibility with academic requirement, while keeping student choice at the centre.

New Textbooks To Focus On Local And Global Context

The updated curriculum also places strong emphasis on contextual learning. New textbooks will include local social, cultural and geographical references, along with national and global content. Officials said this approach is intended to make learning more relevant to students’ real-life experiences and surroundings.

Another key focus of the State Curriculum Framework is school culture. According to Ravidarshan Topal, the framework outlines detailed guidelines on school processes and the role of teachers. It recommends steps to strengthen teacher empowerment, encourage community and family participation, and develop schools as inclusive learning spaces rather than only academic centres.

NEP 2020 Reforms, Teacher Standards Under Discussion

In addition, discussions are continuing on other reforms proposed under National Education Policy 2020. One such proposal is the National Teacher Professional Standards, which seeks to define teachers’ roles, required skills and performance evaluation through a common framework. Officials believe this will help raise teaching standards and improve overall education quality across schools.

The revised curriculum framework is expected to be implemented in phases, with further guidelines to be issued soon.
