West Bengal Higher Secondary Examination: For students who recently passed the West Bengal Higher Secondary Examination but desire to improve their scores in specific subjects, the Higher Secondary Education Parliament has extended a crucial opportunity. This initiative, specifically catering to those who qualified under Regulation 9(2), allows them to re-sit for examinations. Despite this beneficial provision, the initial turnout for applications was lower than expected, prompting the Education Parliament to extend the deadline. The application process has been reopened to ensure that all eligible students get a fair chance to apply.

Chiranjeev Bhattacharya, President of the Higher Secondary Education Parliament, emphasized that this extended opportunity is "in the interest of the students." He noted that only about 100 applications had been submitted previously, leading to the decision to restart the application process. This proactive step aims to provide a second window for students who might have missed the initial deadline, ensuring broader participation in this advantageous new system.

Understanding Regulation 9(2):

To fully grasp the benefit of this extended application period, it's essential to understand Regulation 9(2) of the Higher Secondary Examination system. The Class 12 examination is conducted across a total of six subjects. Out of these, passing two language-based subjects is mandatory. In addition, students must pass at least three out of the remaining four optional subjects.

For instance, if a student takes Bengali, English, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Biology, and passes all subjects except Physics, they will not fail Higher Secondary overall. Instead, their Physics marks will typically not be considered in the final result, and their passing status will be determined based on the 'Best of Five' subjects. Students who achieve their Higher Secondary pass certificate under this specific system fall under Regulation 9(2). The recent notification from the Education Parliament now grants these Regulation 9(2) passers the option to re-sit the examination under the new semester system, if they choose to improve their marks in specific subjects.

Benefits for Students Under the New System:

The Education Council highlights significant advantages for students opting to re-sit examinations under the new semester system:

Joint Examination Eligibility: Often, students passing under Regulation 9(2) might face challenges in securing admission to joint entrance examinations for professional courses. This is because many such examinations require passing specific core subjects (like Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics for science streams).

Avoiding a Dropped Year: Previously, if a student failed or scored low in a crucial subject (even if they passed overall under Regulation 9(2)), they might have to wait another year to reappear as a non-regular candidate.

Regular Candidate Status: The new system allows Regulation 9(2) students to gain admission as regular candidates in the semester system again, without having to wait a full year.

Semester Exams Opportunity: These candidates will specifically get the chance to appear for the third and fourth semester examinations. However, it's important to note that they will have to re-take all subjects in this scenario.

Supriyo Panja, Principal of Park Institution, applauded the extension, suggesting many students might have been unaware of this opportunity. He emphasized the need for school principals to be more proactive in disseminating this information to students.
