Yearender 2024: As we approach the new academic year in 2025, here's a look back at the main statements made by the University Grants Commission for educational institutions in 2024.
Students in undergraduate programs will have the flexibility to determine the duration of courses
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has authorized the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) to provide the Accelerated Degree Programme (ADP) and the Extended Degree Programme. This will allow undergraduate students to shorten or extend their study periods instead of the normal length of their degree programs. ADP enables students to finish a three- or four-year degree in less time by earning more credits every semester, whereas EDP provides a longer timetable with fewer credits per semester.
Although the degrees will include a self-contained notation indicating that the academic standards for a typical duration have been fulfilled in a shortened or extended duration, they will be treated equally with standard duration degrees for academic and employment purposes.

UGC is seeking to alter the hiring process for professors
According to the new guidelines, postgraduate degree holders with a passion for new fields such as entrepreneurship, startups, and industry partnerships can be immediately recruited as professors in higher education institutions. According to the current rules, the minimum qualification for professorship is a PhD and a four-year graduation/PG degree. In addition, graduation/postgraduate degrees and a PhD in the same subject are required.
UGC might allow 4-year degree courses to be finished in three years
UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar has stated that the education board is exploring accelerated completion of degree options for students. This means that students will soon be able to complete a three-year degree in two and a half years, as well as four-year courses in three.
Ayurvedic Biology Added as a Subject in National Eligibility Test
UGC has added Ayurveda Biology to the UGC-National Eligibility Test (NET), which will be administered commencing in December 2024. The addition of Ayurveda Biology is consistent with the UGC's commitment to integrating traditional Indian knowledge into higher education.
