Congress leader M B Patil on Saturday stormed back to power in Babaleshwar, a seat held by him thrice before. Babaleshwar has been a Congress bastion under Mallanagouda Basanagouda Patil since 2008. M B Patil secured a total of 74,950 votes, 52.2 per cent of the total votes cast. He defeated his closest rival, Vijaykumar (Vijaykumar) Patil from the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The Congress party registered a thumping 135-seat win in the Karnataka Assembly election, defeating BJP which secured only 66 seats. The Janata Dal (Secular) meanwhile secured only 19 seats, losing its tag of 'kingmaker' in the state. 

Babaleshwar is an Assembly constituency located in the Bijapur district of Karnataka. The Babaleshwar, which falls in the Kittur Karnataka region of the state, went to polls on May 10. The Babaleshwar Vidhan Sabha seat is categorised as Scheduled Caste Rural.

Babaleshwar Vidhan Sabha seat held the assembly polls on May 10, 2023 along with 223 other constituencies of Karnataka. The counting of votes for Karnataka Assembly election, held on May 13, 2023, established continued dominance of M B Patil over Bableshwar.

Babaleshwar Assembly Constituency 2023: Key Contests

Sitting Congress (INC) MLA M B Patil fought to retain his seat for a fourth-straigh term. Patil has held the Babaleshwar seat three times – 2008, 2013, 2018. Earlier, he served as the MLA from Tikota between 1991-1994 and 2004-2008. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had fielded Vijugouda S Patil to take on M B Patil for the second time despite defeat in 2018.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) gave the Babaleshwar ticket to Kamanna S Ganganahalli Shivaraj Patil while Janata Dal Secular (JDS) fielded Basavaraj Honawada.

Babaleshwar Assembly Election 2018

In the 2018 Karnataka Assembly Election, Indian National Congress leader M B Patil beat BJP' Vijugouda S Patil to storm back to power. M B Patil won by a margin of 29,715 votes. There were a total of 383314 electors registered for voting. Of these 94,574 were male, 89,509 female and 8 voters belonged to the third gender. The Babaleshwar constituency recorded a voter turnout of 81.07 per cent.
