BJP candidate and Lok Sabha MP Diya Kumari won the Vidhyadhar Nagar seats in the 2023 Rajasthan assembly elections on Sunday by a margin of 71,368 votes. The BJP leader, who is a member of the erstwhile Jaipur Royal family defeated Congress candidate Sitaram Agarwal and earned a total of 1,58,516 votes.  

Diya Kumari secured a win for the second time in the Rajasthan assembly elections. She first became an MLA in 2013 from Sawai Madhopur constituency and also won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Rajsamand.  

Diya Kumari is the granddaughter of the last ruling monarch of the princely state Jaipur and the daughter of erstwhile Jaipur royal Sawai Bhawani Singh, who was a war veteran. Her father served as a lieutenant colonel and the commanding officer of the Para Commandos of the 10th Parachute Regiment in the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

She appealed for votes describing herself as a “daughter of Jaipur”. He introduced herself to the voters as the princess who walks on the streets to get the support of the masses for winning the election held on November 25.

She is associated with several organisations including the Eye Bank Society of Rajasthan and  Rays, an NGO working for HIV+ children. She is a popular personality among the people because of her royal persona and down-to-earth personality which connects her with common citizens.     

Diya Kumari, who contested again from Jaipur’s Vidhyanagar East region, is being counted among the favourites to lead the state including BJP veteran Vasundra Raje, Mahant Balak Nath Yogi and Rajvardhan Rathore.
