Over 100 million eligible voters in 58 constituencies across eight states and union territories, including the capital New Delhi, are set to vote in the sixth phase of Lok Sabha Election 2024 today (May 25). Meanwhile, many are concerned that the heatwave condition in northern parts of the country, including Delhi and neighbouring Haryana, could discourage voters from going to the polling stations and cast their votes amid low voter turnout in the previous phases of the election.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a severe heatwave warning, marked with a red alert, for several states including Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi on Saturday. Additionally, heat conditions are expected to persist in regions of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
According to the latest weather bulletin, the heatwave is projected to endure across these states for the next three days. Specifically, the Jammu division, isolated areas of Himachal Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh are likely to experience elevated temperatures until May 27, Gujarat until May 26, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra until May 25.
