Amethi Lok Sabha Election 2024: Kishori Lal Sharma, Congress leader and loyalist of Rahul Gandhi, is set to file his nomination for the Lok Sabha elections from Uttar Pradesh's Amethi seat. Amethi, once a stronghold of the Gandhi family, saw a shift in the 2019 elections when Rahul Gandhi lost to BJP's Smriti Irani. Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi, who represented Amethi in Parliament from 2004 to 2019, will file his nomination papers from the family's traditional stronghold, Raebareli. His mother, Sonia Gandhi, held the Raebareli constituency from 2004 to 2024 before moving to the Rajya Sabha earlier this year. Previously, there were speculations about Priyanka Gandhi Vadra contesting from Raebareli.
Who Is Kishori Lal Sharma
- Kishori Lal Sharma is a trusted aide of the Gandhi family, having served as Sonia Gandhi's representative in Raebareli. He plays a pivotal role in managing matters related to the Gandhi family in Raebareli and Amethi.
- Sharma, originally from Punjab, first arrived in Amethi as a Congress worker in 1983 and has been closely associated with the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He continued to work for the Congress party in Amethi even during the Gandhi family's break from electoral politics in the 1990s.
- Sharma played a significant role in Sonia Gandhi's electoral victory in Amethi in 1999, which marked her entry into Parliament. After Sonia Gandhi shifted to Raebareli, Sharma followed suit and managed party affairs in both constituencies.
- When Rahul Gandhi was elected to the Lok Sabha from Amethi in 2024, Sharma started to manage the party's affairs in both Amethi and Raebareli. He has also worked for the Congress party in Bihar and Punjab.
Congress Strongholds On Amethi And Raebareli Seats
The Congress party has historically enjoyed consistent victories in the Raebareli and Amethi constituencies, maintaining an unbroken winning streak from the 1999 to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. However, in 2019, Rahul Gandhi suffered a defeat in Amethi against Union Minister Smriti Irani. Both seats hold significant historical importance as strongholds of the Gandhi-Nehru family for several decades.
