The counting of votes polled for Assembly elections held in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh is underway today, however, the same for Mizoram will be held on Monday (December 4). The decision to postpone the counting of votes for Mizoram was taken by the Election Commission amid protests organised by Mizoram NGO Coordination Committee (NGOCC).
The group had demanded the postponement citing the fact that the counting day falls on a Sunday, which is a sacred day for Christians. Voting was held in Mizoram in November along with the four other states where Assembly polls were held.
All arrangements and preparations for the counting of votes in Mizoram on December 4 have been completed, Aizawl Deputy Commissioner Nazuk Kumar said. "Our counting day will be Monday, which is December 4, so counting will begin at 8 am and all our preparations are in place because we were prepared for Sunday," Nazuk was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
"We have 12 counting halls and six returning officers. In each hall, depending on the size of the hall and the number of polling stations, we'll have a range of 14-7 tables. Then there will be a separate counting table for postal ballots," he added.
According to the exit polls, the Mizo National Front (MNF) and the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) are the forerunners in the race to form the next government in Mizoram. Most of the exit polls have predicted the MNF, which is led by incumbent Chief Minister Zoramthanga, to have an edge in the northeastern state while there is also the possibility of a hung assembly.
The BJP has taken considerable leads in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, while the Congress party seems to be on its way to defeat the Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao-led BRS in Telangana. The BRS has ruled Telangana since 2014.
