As Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) registered a thumping win in Mizoram Assembly election 2023, former IPS officer Lalduhoma's name has emerged prominently. The 74-year-old leader has been projected by the ZPM as its chief ministerial candidate in Mizoram. As the counting of votes for Mizoram Assembly election continued on Monday, Lalduhoma won from Serchhip by a margin of 8,314 votes. Lalduhoma is all set to meet the Governor on Tuesday to stake claim to form the government in the state.

ZPM ousted Chief Minister Zoramthanga-led Mizo National Front (MNF) in Mizoram as it sailed through the majority mark of 21 seats in the state. ZPM bagged 27 of 40 seats as it swept the polls. MNF has secured only 8 seats while its ally BJP has managed to win only 2 seats. Congress was limited to one seat in these elections.

Who Is Lalduhoma: All You Need To Know

Lalduhoma was an officer in the Indian Police Service (IPS), posted in Goa. He has also served as security in-charge for former prime minister Indira Gandhi in Delhi. After his service as an IPS officer came to an end, he formed the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) in 2018. 

Lalduhoma became a member of Lok Sabha in 1984. His political career witnessed a low in 2020 when he was disqualified under the anti-defection law. Lalduhoma became the first Member of Parliament to be disqualified under the anti-defection law. However, he made a political recovery after he won the by-election to the Serchhip seat in 2021. 

The ZPM leader had emerged as a chief ministerial candidate for ZPM when the party entered it first Assembly elections in 2018. In its debut elections, ZPF primarily fought on the issue of reinstatement of a liquor ban. Contested on 36 out of 40 seats, the new born party secured victory in 8 seats, along with support from independent candidates.

All About ZPM

The Zoram People's Movement was created by the coming together of six regional parties. These included Mizoram People's Conference, Zoram Exodus Movement, Zoram Nationalist Party, Zoram Decentralisation Front, Mizoram People's Party and Zoram Reformation Front.

ZPM was officially registered with the Election Commission of India (ECI) in July 2019. The same year, ZPM's largest founding member, Mizoram People's Conference, quit the alliance.

In the 2023 Mizoram Assembly Elections, held on November 7, the ZPM contested on all 40 seats. The elections registered an impressive voter turnout of over 80 per cent.
