Lok Sabha Election 2024: The suspense over possible candidates for the historic Nehru-Gandhi strongholds of Amethi and Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh is all set to end today. Meanwhile, uncertainty remains among Congress leaders and workers as to whether Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra would contest from these constituencies or not. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is expected to announce the candidates for the two seats.
During a press conference on Wednesday, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said a decision would be made regarding these seats in the next 24-30 hours. "In the next 24-30 hours, the Congress President will finalise the candidates, and his decision will be announced formally," Ramesh said.
Amethi Lok Sabha Election: What Congress Workers Want
Earlier on Tuesday, the party workers held a protest, demanding the candidacy of a Gandhi family member from the Amethi constituency. Holding the posters with "Amethi maange Rahul Gandhi. Amethi Maange Priyanka Gandhi (Amethi wants Rahul Gandhi or (his sister) Priyanka Gandhi Vadra)" written on them, the district leadership of the party gathered at the party office in Gauriganj, Amethi on May 30.

While suspense surrounding the Congress candidate for the Amethi constituency continues, recently, posters advocating for Robert Vadra, husband of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, have surfaced outside the local party office. The posters bear the slogan, "Amethi ki janta kare pukar, Robert Vadra ab ki baar (the people of Amethi want Robert Vadra this time)".
About Amethi-Raebareli Seats
The Congress has historically secured victory in the Raebareli and Amethi constituencies, maintaining a winning streak from the 1999 to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. However, Rahul Gandhi faced defeat in Amethi against Union Minister Smriti Irani in 2019. On the other hand, Sonia Gandhi has chosen not to contest for Lok Sabha in 2024, despite her consistent victories from Raebareli.
