Bollywood has a history of presenting visual effects that sometimes fell short, leaving audiences amused for the wrong reasons. While the advancements in technology have likely improved VFX standards in recent Bollywood releases -- Brahmastra, Thank God and Ra.One, initial doubts arose after viewing Prabhas and Saif Ali khan starrer Adipurush. Following criticism, the creators of Adipurush opted to enhance and refine the VFX, however, nothing really changed.

The film Brahmastra, directed by Ayan Mukerji, was applauded for its innovative use of CGI and VFX, particularly its utilisation of motion capture technology, marking a groundbreaking approach in Bollywood. Despite this, several movies also faced shortcomings in certain aspects of its visual effects execution. Here are five Bollywood films that received criticism for their subpar VFX:

Adipurush

Adipurush has encountered criticism following the release of its teaser due to concerns about its VFX quality and CGI, alongside claims of misinterpretation of the characters like Lord Ram, Sita, Ravana, and Hanuman. Some expressed dissatisfaction with the teaser's visuals, particularly disapproving Saif Ali Khan's portrayal of Ravana, noting its resemblance to a Mughal warrior.

Krrish 3

Released in 2013, the film is directed and produced by Rakesh Roshan. It's the third installment in the 'Krrish' film series and a sequel to 'Koi... Mil Gaya'. The film stars Hrithik Roshan as the titular character, Krrish, along with Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut, and Vivek Oberoi in pivotal roles. The story revolves around Krrish battling an evil scientist, Kaal, who creates mutants to take over the world. While the film received commercial success and positive reviews for Hrithik Roshan's performance and the storyline, it faced criticism for its visual effects, which were deemed inconsistent and lacking in certain sequences.

Love Story 2050

Sci-fi romantic film released in 2008, was directed by Harry Baweja. The movie stars Harman Baweja and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles. The story revolves around Karan (played by Harman Baweja), a young man who travels to the future, specifically the year 2050, in pursuit of his love interest, Sana aka Priyanka Chopra. In the future, he discovers various advancements and challenges while trying to reunite with his love. The film faced heavy criticism for its execution, including the visual effects, which were seen as unconvincing and lacking in sophistication, failing to create a believable futuristic world.

Tejas

The plot of Kangan Ranaut's film revolves around a terrorist attack targeting the Ram temple in Ayodhya before its inauguration. While it was expected to be a gripping sequence, however, the execution falls short, with visual effects resembling video game graphics from the '90s. The film's unclean editing and subpar visual effects were quite evident, undermining Kangana Ranaut's average performance, unable to salvage the movie.

Kalank

The period drama film released in 2019, was directed by Abhishek Varman. It featured an ensemble cast including Madhuri Dixit, Sonakshi Sinha, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Sanjay Dutt. Set in the pre-independence era, Kalank revolves around intricate relationships, conflicts, and love stories. The film's narrative delves into societal issues, forbidden love, and the consequences of choices made in a complex, multi-layered storyline.

While Kalank garnered attention for its grand sets, lavish costumes, and stellar performances, it received mixed reviews from both audiences and critics. Some praised its visual opulence and performances, while others criticized the convoluted plot and pacing issues. The intended frightening bullfight sequence in the film turned comical and lost its seriousness due to the presence of an animated bull that failed to evoke the intended fear or tension.
