5 Most Controversial Indian Movies To Watch On OTT: In the past few years, there have been a few movies that came across huge controversies before or after its release. Despite facing such backlash, the films still managed to pave their way at the box office or on OTT. If you are wondering which movies became the most controversial movies in Indian cinema in recent times, then here is the answer. But don’t forget to watch it on OTT platforms such as Netflix, Prime Video, Disney + Hotstar, Zee5 and other streaming sites. 

Maharaj (Netflix)

The story is about the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862 when an honest journalist questions a religious leader’s behaviour towards women in the society. The movie received a huge backlash from the Vaishnavite section who filed a case against the makers at the Gujarat High Court for misrepresenting their religious beliefs. The movie was halted for a day before its release as Pustimargi section expressed their concerns. Single bench judge Justice Sangeeta Vishen watched the movie before it was finally released on Netflix on June 21. 

Pathaan (Prime Video)

The movie is about an Indian agent, who races against a doomsday clock as a ruthless mercenary, with a criminal vendetta, wants an attack against the country. One of the songs in the film Besharam Rang was highly criticised by some Hindu sections. Deepika Padukone was seen wearing a saffron swimsuit which hurted the sentiments of people as they consider it to be pious. But the song translated itself to ‘shameless colour’, which certainly didn’t go well with people. Several party members and common people burned the effigies of Shah Rukh Khan to condemn having this song in the film. 


Annapoorani (Simply South)

One of the scenes in the film is when Nayanthara’s character is seen offering namaz in a hijab before cooking biryani. Her friend allegedly influenced her to cut meat and claimed that Lord Rama and Goddess Sita also consumed meat. The movie further received backlash because it promoted ‘love jihad’. 


The Kerala Story (Zee5)

The story is about a converted Muslim woman Fatima Ba, who narrates her story of how she once wanted to become a nurse but was abducted from her home. She claimed that she was manipulated by religious vanguards and was turned into an ISIS terrorist who landed in Afghanistan jail. Some politicians from Kerala called for the ban after its teaser was released which claimed ‘heart-breaking and gut-wrenching stories of 32,000 females’ from Kerala who joined IS. 

The Kashmir Files (Zee5)

The movie is about the suffering and struggle of the Kashmiri Pandit in 1990. A young college student who set out on a quest to uncover the truth. A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed against the film’s release. In which it was claimed that the movie could hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community and violence could triggered against them.
