Kiran Rao's second directorial venture Laapataa Ladies has been ruling the headlines since the release of its trailer. After 12 years of her directorial debut film Dhobi Ghat, Rao is back in the director's seat with Laapataa Ladies. The movie, starring Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Srivastav, and Nitanshi Goel, is a clean family movie that leaves you empathising with the characters while laughing at them.

While the Bollywood movie Laapataa Ladies features a relatively new star cast, director Kiran Rao in an exclusive conversation with Jagran English revealed why it was important to cast fresh faces and how the true triumph of the film lies in its performances.

Kiran Rao explained that she wanted to avoid star baggage in Laapataa Ladies. She claimed that with established actors comes expectations of the audience who wants to see them do more. She explains, "Since you don't know any of the actors in this film, it is easy to sync in and you can forget all about the stars because you really don't know what to expect from them."

Aamir Khan Auditioned For Laapataa Ladies

Director Kiran Rao also confessed that her ex-husband and Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan was very interested in starring in Laapataa Ladies. He loved Ravi Kishan's role of Manohar Lal and even auditioned for it. Rao revealed, "Aamir tested for the role of Manohar and one of the reasons that both Aamir and I decided he wouldn't be right for the role, apart from the fact that Ravi Kishan fits it more organically, is that star baggage is something I would have had to fight right through."

Kiran Rao also claimed that Aamir Khan's audition was really good but still, they decided to not cast him and selected Ravi Kishan for the role. "You know the expectation that this star is going to do something will be there from the beginning. So I think what fresh faces does is give you the freedom to kind of subvert or play with an audience's expectations of a character," she concluded.

Lapataa Ladies Trailer and Release Date

Set in the rural India of 2001, Laapataa Ladies is the story of a fictitious town called 'Nirmal Pradesh'. It is a story of two women who set on a journey with their husbands to go to their in-laws' house after marriage but get swapped. The film first premiered at the annual Toronto International Film Festival in September 2023.

Also starring Chhaya Kadam, Geeta Aggarwal Sharma, Durgesh Kumar, Pranjal Pateriya other than Ravi Kishan, Sparsh Srivastav, Pratibha Ranta, and Nitanshi Goel. It is scheduled to release in theaters on 1 March 2024.
