New Delhi | Jagran Entertainment Desk: Bollywood Superstar Amitabh Bachchan on Sunday was honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Award by President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. The 77-year-old actor received the highest honour of the film industry for his "outstanding contribution to the cinema world".
Bachchan had skipped the National Film Awards ceremony earlier this year due to health issues and was conferred with the prestigious award on Sunday.
The prestigious award is named after the father of Indian cinema, Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, and it was instituted in 1969. The award is conferred by the government for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian Cinema. The award is comprised of a Golden Lotus and a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh.
The recipient is honoured for their "outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema" and is selected by a committee consisting of eminent personalities from the Indian film industry. So far 66 people have been conferred with this award.
Prakash Javadekar, Minister of Information & Broadcasting, on September 24 had announced that Bachchan was selected for Dadasaheb Phalke Award and said that he has inspired 'two generations' of people.
"The legend Amitabh Bachchan who entertained and inspired for two generations has been selected unanimously for Dada Saheb Phalke award. The entire country and international community is happy. My heartiest Congratulations to him," Javadekar had said earlier.
After the announcement, Bachcham -- who is known as 'Shehenshah' of Bollywood -- said that he was left with no words to express his gratitude.
"There is a paucity of words searching a response .. for the generosity of words that pour in.. I am but deeply grateful and most humbled .. my sincerest gratitude," Bachchan had said.
The veteran Bollywood star was last seen in 'Badla'. He has won four National Film Awards for Best Actor in his career for 'Agneepath', 'Black', 'Paa' and 'Piku'. In 2015, he was honoured with Padma Vibhushan -- the country's second --highest civilian honour.
