Bachchan has been the host of the show since its inaugural season in 2000, with the exception of one season which was hosted by Shah Rukh Khan.

During the show's 1000th episode, Bachchan had spoken about his difficult times and the financial constraints that led him to take on the show. He shared, "Darasal, ikkis saal ho gaye hain. San 2000 mein iski shuruat hui thi. Aur uss samay humko pata nahi tha, sab log keh rahe they ke aap film se television mein jaa rahe hain, bade parde se chhote parde par aa rahe hain, aapki image ko nuksaan hoga.

Lekin humari apni kuch paristhitiyan aisi thi ke mujhe laga ke… Filmon mein kaam jo hai woh mil nahi raha tha, lekin pehle broadcast ke baad jiss tarah ke reaction aane shuru hue, phir aisa laga ke puri duniya mil gayi hai (Actually, it's been 21 years. We started the show in 2000. At that time, we had no idea. People were saying that going from movies to television, going from big screens to small screens, would harm your image. But our circumstances were such that I thought... I wasn't getting any work in films, but after the show premiered and the kind of reactions that started pouring in, it felt like the entire world was with me)."

Siddhartha Basu, the producer of the show, told The Indian Express that Amitabh Bachchan was flown to London to witness the taping of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? before he agreed to host KBC. The Uunchai actor had one condition that the discipline of the international show be replicated in KBC.

"Once he saw it, he decided to do KBC with one rider — that we replicate the conditions and discipline of that show," he said.
