Nayak, released in 2001, remains a cherished political action film featuring Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukerji. The movie narrates the unexpected journey of Shivaji Rao (played by Anil Kapoor), a common man who ascends to the position of Chief Minister. The film was a remake of Shankar's 1999 Tamil movie Mudhalvan and became a critical and commercial success.
After twenty-three years, there are strong indications that Nayak 2 is in the works, marking the reunion of Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukerji. The sequel is expected to pick up the storyline from where it left off, delving into the aftermath of Shivaji and his family's tenure in power. Themes of corruption, bureaucracy, and the influence of the masses will be central to the narrative.
Producer Mukut has confirmed the progress of the project. He revealed that the screenplay is currently under development with the aim of retaining Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukerji in their iconic roles.
“We are planning the sequel and taking the story forward with the existing characters. I bought the rights a long time ago from producer AM Rathnam. We are writing the script right now with the leads in mind and incorporating other actors too. As soon as the writing is complete, we’ll decide the way ahead. We have a couple of directors in mind, but nobody has been finalized,” Mukut told Mid-day.
Mukut mentioned that initial discussions with Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukerji have already begun, though they are still in the early stages. The introduction of new actors will depend on how the characters evolve and who fits the roles best.
Nayak, alongside Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukerji, also featured stalwarts like Amrish Puri, Paresh Rawal, and Johnny Lever. The film's unique storyline and stellar performances made it one of the standout films of 2001.
As fans eagerly await official announcements, the prospect of seeing Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukerji together on screen once again is thrilling.
