After their successful collaboration on Dev D in 2009, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and actor Abhay Deol drifted apart due to their differences, with the latter openly discussing their rift. Recently, Anurag addressed the issue, suggesting Abhay wouldn't be able to confront the truth if he spoke publicly about it. In an interview with Janice Sequeira, Anurag countered accusations of being bad at maintaining relationships. He highlighted Abhay's absence during film promotions and emphasised that if the JNMD actor perceives him as toxic, it's solely from Abhay's perspective.

Opening up about his rift, Anurag said, "Abhay, I have not met him since the shooting of Dev D. He didn't even come for promotions and he has never spoken to me since. If he wants to call me toxic, it's his side of the story." Adding, "The truth can't be spoken, because if I will speak the truth, he won't be able to show his face. There is too much truth in there that Abhay will also not have the courage to talk about. And I will not talk about it because it will make him look like s**t."

Further, talking about being labelled as 'toxic', he stated, "I can't always make people happy. I avoid working with people who I think are problematic, and the ones who think I am problematic are the ones with whom I have never worked. That's why they categorise me as a problematic person."

Anurag Kashyap and Abhay Deol collaborated on Dev D, where the latter starred in the lead role. While initially praised, the film later drew criticism from Abhay for allegedly glorifying 'toxic masculinity.' This disagreement sparked a rift between the actor and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.
