Success means different things to different people. For some, it's measured by wealth, while for others, it's measured by their happiness and overall satisfaction with life. In the entertainment industry, there is no sure-fire way to achieve success. Despite giving great performances, some actors may not receive the recognition and appreciation they deserve.

Birthday girl Anushka Sharma believes that success is determined by versatility. She has often mentioned during interviews that she strives to choose roles that differ from those she has previously played. To achieve this, she prefers collaborating with directors who have diverse perspectives.

Anushka, who has demonstrated her versatility with almost every film she has appeared in, made unconventional choices with movies like Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, NH10, and Phillauri, at a very early stage in her career. Therefore, as the brave actor turns 35 today, we look back at five times she made a surprising move in her career, leaving audiences both pleased and shocked at the same time.

Pari

Anushka Sharma's decision to take on the role of a witch in the horror movie Pari was an unconventional one. Horror films had not typically been successful for actresses in the past, including Konkona Sen Sharma and Bipasha Basu.

Despite this, Anushka's decision to take on a horror role was a bold move, especially considering her past roles in films such as Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Ladies VS Ricky Bahl, and Band Baaja Baaraat. The movie did reasonably well at the box office, and Anushka's ability to switch from bubbly roles to a spine-chilling character impressed audience.

Phillauri

Anushka took another unconventional role in her second production by portraying a ghost character in the movie. Despite being at the peak of her success, not many actresses would opt for such a risky role. However, Anushka played the character of an endearing ghost and managed to connect with the audience.

Sultan

Kangana Ranaut and Swara Bhaskar were among the actresses who were offered the role of Sultan first, but they turned it down. However, Anushka Sharma accepted the role and portrayed the character of a wrestler alongside Salman Khan very proficiently.

Her performance in the movie was praised by many, including celebrated female wrestlers like Deepika Kaliraman who told Mid-day that Anushka's wrestling movements, such as the Dhobi pachad move and Bharandaach, were all accurate and realistic. She also added that Anushka looked like a real wrestler and didn't seem fake in any way.

NH10

Anushka Sharma, in this movie, challenged gender stereotypes by portraying a powerful female character who fights like a man against a group of anti-socials, disproving the notion that women are weaker and less intelligent than men. Her strong performance had a lasting impact on the audience.

Band Baaja Barat

In Band Baaja Baaraat, Anushka showcased her acting mettle once again as she slipped into the character of Shruti Kakkar like second skin. The role required her to portray a typical Delhi girl in her 20s, who is straightforward and practical, and she pulled it off effortlessly.
