Renowned musician AR Rahman has been making headlines since last year following his separation from his wife Saira Banu almost after 29 years of marriage. In November 2024, the Oscar-winning music composer shocked everyone with his separation announcement. Since then, he has been receiving backlash on social media. Recently, he addressed how he has been under intense public scrutiny over this matter.
AR Rahman on trolling after split with Saira Banu
AR Rahman got candid about his personal and professional life in a conversation with Nayandeep Rakshit on his YouTube channel. Breaking silence on backlash, he said, "The choice of being in public life is intentional, so everybody gets reviewed. Right from the richest person to even God gets reviewed — so who am I? As long as we stay together and are not conceited or toxic. Even the people who criticise us — they are all family.”
Emphasizing his point, he highlighted the idea of karma, Rahman added, "The thing is Karma. If I say things about someone’s family, someone will say things about mine. And we, as Indians, believe in this. Nobody should speak unnecessarily because everyone has a sister, a wife, and a mother. Even when I feel someone has said something hurtful about my family, I often pray, ‘Please God, forgive them and guide them onto the right path.’”
AR Rahman's separation
AR Rahman got married to Saira Banu on March 12, 1995. They are parents to Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen. After 29 years of togetherness, the couple decided to part ways. In November 2024, the couple announced their separation in a joint statement.
Rahman also tweeted about his decision. His post read, "We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter.”
