Indian movies based on the Anti Sikh Riots exhibit an unique emotion and power with so many unforgettable incidents that happened in the history of India. The Indian jurisdiction was criticised for not making it a living movement as there was injustice and tons of victims who were ignored as they were not citizens.

Recently, Sharan Art’s film ‘Mastaney’ hit theatres and is having a successful run at the box office. The film is based on Nadar Shah’s undefeated army attacked by Sikh Rebellions in 1739. As Nadar Shah tries to arrest them, things fall in place for the Sikh Army and talks about its prowess and power.

To make the audience and young generation know more about such inspirational stories, several filmmakers have carved their plotline revolving around similar Sikh rebellions moments and issues. Several Hindi films also showcase the same. Let’s take a look at some of the same genre films.

Punjab 1984

Diljit Dosanjh led film ‘Punjab 1984’ was released in 2014. A period drama genre film particularly focuses on the era of 1984-1985. The film tries to make people know about an incident that occurred in the lives of the Sikhs and people, who were not behind the assassination of late Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi.

Hawayein

Based on the backdrop of 1984 Sikh Genocide, the film was released in 2003 and is based on the real-life incident which impacted the operation Bluestar and Indira Gandhi’s assassination on people’s life in Punjab. The film features Ammtoje Mann, Mukul Dev, and Babbu Maan in lead roles.

Jogi

Released on Netflix and directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, the film stars Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role. An action-emotional film telling the tale of three friends fighting to save the lives of their Sikh community members in New Delhi during the 1980s. The film was released on September 16, 2022.

Kesari

Starring Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra in lead roles, the film is based on Havildar Ishar Singh, a soldier in the British Indian Army. Leading 21 Sikh soldiers in a fight against 10,000 Pashtun invaders, what unfolds in the greatest last stand in the war of all time. The film is directed by Anurag Singh and is released on March 21, 2019.

Des Hoyaa Pardes

Gurdas Maan led ‘Des Hoyaa Pardes’ is a Punjabi film based on the life of Gurshaan Singh Somal and the struggle of his family in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The film also features Juhi Chawla and Divya Dutt in lead roles, and was released in 2004.
