Mohanlal has recently released the highly anticipated Virtual 3D trailer for his directorial debut, Barroz. The fantasy film, which marks Mohanlal’s first venture into the direction, has been in the making since 2021 and is scheduled to hit theatres worldwide on December 25, 2024.
The 2-minute trailer introduces Barroz, the titular character played by Mohanlal, who is a ghost and the guardian of Vasco da Gama’s long-hidden treasure. The trailer takes viewers on a journey through time, showcasing two distinct timelines: one set in the present day and another during the Portuguese colonization of India. Barroz has been guarding the treasure for 400 years, and he vows to relinquish his post only when the true descendant of Gama claims it.
Mohanlal shared the trailer on social media, writing, “The Virtual 3D trailer of #Barroz3D is out NOW! Releasing in theatres worldwide on December 25.” The film has generated significant buzz due to its high production value and Mohanlal's iconic role as both the director and lead actor.
Barroz is based on Jijo Punnoose’s novel Barroz: Guardian of D'Gama's Treasure. The film was initially set to be directed by Jijo, but after a few changes during the pandemic, Mohanlal took on the responsibility of directing the film himself. The screenplay was finalized after more than a year of work, and the film was shot in 3D. Antony Perumbavoor, of Aashirvad Cinemas, is producing the film.
The story of Barroz draws inspiration from a 17th-century myth from the Malabar Coast, blending Portuguese and Afro-Indian folklore. This rich narrative adds depth to the film, making it an exciting mix of history and fantasy. The movie was almost shelved due to budget issues but has now been brought to life with Mohanlal’s vision.
What’s Next for Mohanlal?
After Barroz, Mohanlal will be seen in L2: Empuraan, the sequel to the hit 2019 film Lucifer. He is also working on several other projects, including a film with Mammootty and Kannappa, a Telugu film directed by Vishnu Manchu. Additionally, his much-awaited bilingual project Vrushabha has been delayed.
