Bhumi Pednekkar Took A 9-Month Break After The Royals' Harsh Criticism, Says ‘I Didn’t Want To Dramatise It’

Bhumi Pednekkar is currently gearing up for her upcoming web series Daldal. Her gritty and hard-hitting role of DCP Rita Ferreira did not fail to strike a chord with the audience as the trailer dropped on the internet. Last seen in The Royals, the actress has bounced back with a different role for which she is being applauded. Reacting to the hate Bhumi received for her performance in the Royals, the actress opened up about the repercussions of the harsh criticism. She further revealed that she said no to several projects, awards shows, and even returned the token money.

Bhumi Pednekkar recently opened up about how the backlash for her role in The Royals pushed her to take a long break of 9 months from acting. In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress said, "There was a lot of trolling, a lot of bots. But between all of that, there was a lot of constructive criticism as well. And that was one experience that got me to take some really drastic decisions for my life in 2025. One of them was taking a break. I didn’t announce it because I didn’t want to dramatise it."

Bhumi further revealed what she did during her break. She shared that she took care of herself, enrolled herself in a course at Harvard and travelled a lot, "I took a break, I haven’t been on a set since June. Many times, when an actor admits to that, there’s a lot of negative connotation attached to it. But it was something I did voluntarily, and it’s the best decision I’ve taken for myself,” added Bhumi. She watched movies, read books, took a course at Harvard University, and travelled extensively to build on her bank of life experiences."

Bala actress further shared the repercussions of the criticism and how she decided to shut down completely. She claimed, "I left movies. I had to return the signing amounts. I had to say no to a cheque, which is a lot. It was not just about not doing the films, but reducing my presence in the world of media. So, it was saying no to a lot of award shows and fashion events. I wanted to just cut off. I wanted to go through that experience of what it feels like to just be by myself. If I was to lose everything, will I survive? And I know I will survive."
