Over the years, Hindi cinema has explored and found success in the horror-comedy genre with the movies like 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa' and 'Stree'. But pure horror is still unexplored in Bollywood and has failed miserably as well. After seeing many failed Hindi horror films, the question arises- is the horror genre in Bollywood dead?
Initial Success and Growing Popularity of Horror Films:
In 1949, 'Mahal', starring Ashok Kumar and Madhubala, was one of the first successful horror films made by Hindi cinema. The movie introduced the concept of reincarnation in Bollywood and was a huge success. It was followed by 'Madhumati, starring Vyjayanthimala and Dilip Kumar, which was released in 1958 and followed a similar storyline of reincarnation. However, both films had an element of romance in them.
Meanwhile, movies like 'Bees Saal Baad' and 'Woh Kaun Thi?' had a little horror element but they mainly fall under the mystery-thriller genre. However, after these initial successes, Hindi cinema did not explore much into the horror genre and the movies made under this genre was mediocre at their best.
Is the horror genre in Bollywood dead?
The horror genre regained popularity after the huge success of the 2002 film 'Raaz', starring Bipasha Basu and Dino Morea in the lead role. After the success of Raaz, movies like 'Bhoot', 'Darna Mana Hai', 'Krishna Cottage', and 'Kaal', among others were released but they were not loved by the audience.
After 'Raaz', Vikram Bhatt directed '1920' in 2008 which became a success. The filmmaker went on to direct three more instalments of 'Raaz' and '1920: The Evil Returns'. However, there was nothing new to offer in these movies and the plots were repetitive.
They still rely on the cliches like jump scares and haunted mansions and it feels like Hindi horror films have nothing new to offer. Romance and songs are still very much present in many Bollywood horror films which shifts the focus even if the premise is intriguing.
Underrated Gems:
Movies like '13B' and 'Tumbbad' have dared to show something new in the horror genre and have gained popularity over the years despite failing commercially when they were initially released. Especially 'Tumbbad' has gained a cult classic status over the years and gained an appreciation for its interesting premise and cinematography.
Even though the Netflix film 'Bulbbul' has a horror element, it will fall under the supernatural thriller genre. The movie has also gained praise over the years for its portrayal of atrocities against women through myths and legends.
