Ghaati, starring Anushka Shetty in lead role, is all set for release on July 11, 2025. Earlier, the Telugu film was scheduled for release in theatres on April 18, 2025, but was postponed. Apart from Shetty, Ghaati also stars Vikram Prabhu, Ramya Krishna and Jagapathi Babu in pivotal roles. The film revolves around a victim who turns into a criminal and later becomes a legend, but do you know it is inspired by real incidents surrounding the cannabis trade (smuggling of Ganja) in the Andhra-Odisha border region?

Ghaati explores the complexities of the weed trade and the transformation of a woman caught within its grasp. Director Krish has conducted extensive research on the subject, adding depth and authenticity to the narrative, according to reports.

The cannabis trade (Ganja smuggling) involves the production and sale of cannabis plants and products, including both recreational and medicinal uses. This rapidly growing industry encompasses various aspects, such as cultivation, processing, retail and ancillary services. As more countries legalise cannabis, the industry is experiencing significant expansion, opening up new opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs.

History of Ganja Smuggling in Odissa

In 2022, Andhra Pradesh seized 245,000 kg ganja, and around 70% came from Odisha—highlighting the border’s strategic role in large-scale trafficking. Historical data shows Odisha-AP border (esp. Malkangiri, Koraput) as strongholds for Naxalı-linked ganja farms and trafficking routes, according to reports.

About the movie: The Ghaati project was announced on March 19, 2024, at an Amazon Prime Video showcase event, where the first look was unveiled. Later, on November 7, 2024, a poster and a 47-second glimpse of the film were released to celebrate Anushka Shetty's birthday. The makers further built anticipation by announcing the release date with an intriguing video on December 15, 2024. These strategic promotions have generated significant buzz around the film.
