Sarathkumar, Arpit Ranka, Kaushal Manda, Rahul Madhav, Devaraj, Mukesh Rishi, Brahmanandam, Raghu Babu, Preity Mukhundhan and Madhoo play supporting roles. B-town star Akshay Kumar is making his Telugu movie debut with Kannappa which makes the film more interesting to watch.
According to the trailer, Kannappa, played by Manchu Vishnu, is a skeptic who doesn't believe in Lord Shiva, viewing idols as mere stones. A series of life events make Kannappa encounter an unseen power and energy. Lord Shiva, played by Akshay Kumar, teaches Kannappa a lesson to change his perspective. The film explores Kannappa's journey from skepticism to devotion, highlighting the transformative power of faith and spiritual discovery. Watch the trailer here:
The movie includes special cameos by Mohanlal, Prabhas, Akshay Kumar and Kajal Aggarwal. Kannappa was formally launched on August 18, 2023, while its principal photography began on September 25, 2025 in New Zealand. If the reports are to be believed, Mohanlal, Prabhas, and Akshay Kumar didn't take any remuneration for their cameo roles which was mentioned by actor Vishnu Manchu in an interview.
The film about Kannappa, a devoted follower of Lord Shiva, has a long and complex development history. In 2013, Tanikella Bharani, a seasoned actor, screenwriter, and director, announced plans to create a period drama film titled Bhaktha Kannappa, set in the 14th century, with Sunil cast as the lead. However, after years of struggling to find a producer, Bharani sold the screenplay to Vishnu Manchu.
In 2015, Vishnu's production company, 24 Frames Factory, partnered with an American company to produce the film, now titled Kannappa Katha, with Bharani still attached as director. Vishnu's team worked on rewriting the script to bring the epic story to life.
