In recent years, soon-to-be mom Deepika Padukone has captivated audiences with her versatile roles, especially those portraying mothers. This trend continues with her latest venture, Kalki 2898 AD, where she appears with a baby bump in the trailer, sparking widespread excitement and admiration among fans.
Kalki 2898 AD has generated immense buzz, thanks to its star-studded cast, including Amitabh Bachchan, Prabhas and Kamal Haasan. The plot, set in a futuristic world, promises to be a visual spectacle. However, it's Deepika's portrayal of a pregnant character that has particularly caught the public’s eye. Deepika’s journey as a motherly figure on screen began with Brahmastra Part One: Shiva, where she portrayed Ranbir Kapoor's mother. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, this film is the first installment of the Astraverse trilogy. In Brahmastra, Deepika’s character, Amrita, is revealed to have a crucial role in the mystical narrative surrounding Shiva, played by Ranbir. The film also features Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy and Nagarjuna Akkineni. The storyline follows Shiva, an orphaned DJ who discovers he has a unique power related to fire.
Continuing this trend, Deepika took on the role of Shah Rukh Khan’s mother in Jawan. Shah Rukh Khan played dual roles as Captain Vikram Rathore and his son Azad, while Deepika appeared in a special cameo as Aishwarya, Vikram Rathore’s wife and Azad’s mother.
Her performance in Jawan received much love from the audience, with Deepika expressing her gratitude: “I have no words to say except thank you so much for all the love. I really just did this for my love for Shah Rukh, and everyone knows the relationship that we share. I didn’t anticipate for this to become so special but I’m just proud and happy to be here and support the team.”
The excitement around Deepika's role in Kalki 2898 AD is palpable. Fans took to social media to express their admiration, with a netizen humorously noting, “Deepika Padukone making her own genre of being the important mother of an important child.” Comments like “Mother is mothering!” and “She was manifesting her own baby” flooded the internet, highlighting the fans' enthusiasm and admiration for her acting skills.
Reflecting on her role in Kalki 2898 AD, Deepika shared her apprehensions and excitement in an interview with Film Companion. “I have to say I’m nervous because when the camera rolls, it will feel like familiar territory, but I have not worked with Prabhas before. I have not worked with Nag Ashwin before. I’ll also have to do this in a different language apart from doing it in Hindi, so there are all of these things. Plus, it’s such a VFX-heavy film. Even just the character and the world, all of it is so new for me. But I’m also excited.”
