BIGBANG Taeyang recently shared his thoughts on Kpop’s global rise in an interview, but his comment has ignited a heated online feud between BTS and BIGBANG fans. In an interview with CNN, Taeyang discussed the role of BIGBANG in spreading Kpop worldwide. When asked about the group's contribution to the Hallyu wave, Taeyang said, "Thankfully, we were able to open doors to global markets for many Kpop bands that came after us. And they can perform on world stages. I wouldn’t say we presented that, but it feels great that our efforts have played a part in that."

BIGBANG, as a second-generation boy band, is widely regarded as a trailblazer in the Kpop industry. BTS’ SUGA even acknowledged their influence, saying that BIGBANG played a significant role in shaping BTS' career, with the septet being fans of BIGBANG before their trainee days.

However, Taeyang’s recent remark sparked a strong reaction from BTS' fanbase, ARMY. Many fans felt that Taeyang should have credited BTS for their own efforts in Kpop’s global success. As a result, Taeyang’s Instagram was flooded with comments like "BTS paved the way."

BIGBANG fans, known as VIPs, quickly defended Taeyang, replying with yellow hearts to show their support. The situation escalated, with both fandoms engaging in a fierce battle online. Some fans even tried to mediate, suggesting that both BIGBANG and BTS have played important roles in Kpop’s global popularity.

BIGBANG reunited unofficially at the 2024 MAMA Awards, where G-Dragon, Taeyang and Daesung performed together. The trio’s electrifying performances of BANG BANG BANG and FANTASTIC BABY brought back memories of the group’s earlier days, earning loud cheers from the crowd. However, the group’s lineup has changed over the years, with Seungri’s departure after the Burning Sun scandal and T.O.P (who made an acting comeback in Squid Game 2 after nine years) leaving to focus on his solo career.

Meanwhile, BTS is expected to make a full group comeback in the second half of 2025. Members Jin and Jhope were discharged from the military in 2024. RM, V, Jungkook, Jimin and Suga will be discharged from their military duties later this year.
