BTS Jin Solo Songs: After a long wait of eighteen months, BTS’ eldest member and ARMYs’ beloved star Jin, also known as Kim Seokjin, has finally come back. Jin, who enlisted in the South Korean military as part of the nation’s mandatory military service returned on June 12, 2024, much to the delight of fans worldwide.

Since October 2022, BTS has been on hiatus from major group activities as they prepared for the next chapter of their journey. Jin’s homecoming is a heartwarming reminder that BTS will fulfil their promise to ARMYs and return soon, with other members expected to be discharged in 2025 and Jhope returning a bit earlier in October 2024.

Kim Seokjin, the eldest in the group, possesses a multitude of talents. Before joining BTS, he aspired to pursue acting. Now that he’s back, several K-media reports indicate that production houses are eager to have Jin join them if he chooses to, adding to the fans’ excitement about his solo pursuits.

To celebrate Jin’s return, let’s revisit some of his solo gems that highlight his unique vocals and emotional depth.

The Astronaut (2022):

The Astronaut is Jin's debut solo single, released on October 28, 2022. This song was co-written by Jin, British rock band Coldplay, Norwegian DJ Kygo, Bill Rahko and Chris Martin's son, Moses Martin. The song explores themes of connection and love, reflecting Jin's affection for his fans through a recurring cosmic motif.

Described as "a gift to fans," The Astronaut was released just before Jin's enlistment. Apart from the lyrics and vocals, the music video of the song is a cinematic masterpiece. The lyrics beautifully capture Jin's emotions as he bid farewell to his fans:

“You and me, an unending history/Oh, you became my universe/The story of us/Like that asteroid drifting by without a destination/I, too, was just drifting along/Every dream I found in the darkness/Starting anew this story/When I'm with you/There is no one else/I get heaven to myself/When I’m with you/There is no one else/I feel this way I've never felt”

Yours (2021):

Yours is a poignant ballad that Jin contributed to the original soundtrack of the Kdrama Jirisan, starring Jun Ji Hyun and Joo Ji Hoon. This four-minute track captures the nuanced emotions of the drama's lead characters and is a testament to Jin's vocal prowess and storytelling ability.

Jin’s soft, almost whispering vocals at the beginning, transitioning to powerful high notes, exemplify his craftsmanship. The repetitive lyrics, “I'll be yours (And I'll be yours),” sound heavenly in his voice, making it a beloved OST (Jin’sdebut solo OST) despite the drama not being a major hit.

Super Tuna (2021):

Super Tuna was released on December 5, 2021, following a V Live session held by Jin on his birthday. The accompanying video features Jin and two production team members dancing on a beach. The fun and playful song includes lyrics (English translation) like:

“Thump, thump, my heart beats fast/Where has my fish gone?/Donghae Sea (East Sea)/Seohae Sea (West Sea)/Where must my fish be?”

In an interview with Weverse magazine, Jin shared his initial reluctance to have fans take up the Super Tuna challenge. However, he later embraced the enthusiasm of the ARMYs who made the song a hit. The melody, composed in just five minutes, was a spontaneous creation alongside his producer-turned-fishing-buddy BUMZU.

During FESTA 2024, Kim Seokjin treated ARMYs by adding an extra verse to this fun song.

Abyss (2020):

Abyss was initially released unofficially on Jin's birthday in 2020, and later officially on October 21, 2022. This song delves into themes of self-doubt and the journey to find inner peace. The lyrics reflect Jin's personal struggles and resonate deeply with listeners:

“I hold my breath and enter my ocean/I face beautiful yet sadly crying me/Myself in the darkness/I want to find you and tell you/Today, I want to get to know you even more, yeah/Still, I remain with myself/My voice doesn't come out, I just circle around/That dark place that I wanted to be lost in, I want to go there/I'll be there/Today again, I circle around you”

Abyss serves as a comforting anthem for ARMYs on their path to self-discovery.

Moon (2020):

In a radio interview with SiriusXM, Jin explained the inspiration behind Moon, a track from BTS’ fourth studio album, Map of the Soul: 7. He described the song as a depiction of how the moon views the earth, with Jin as the Moon and ARMY as his Earth. The song's upbeat tone contrasts with his previous melancholic tracks, reflecting his deep love for his fans.

Tonight (2019):

Released on the group’s sixth debut anniversary, Tonight is a heartfelt song written by Jin in memory of his late pet. Jin expressed his emotions through the lyrics, which will resonate with pet parents everywhere:

“Once this night passes I am afraid that I won't see you any more/That transparent glare/That touch that I am so used to/A face that smiled as you looked at me/That now...now...won't I ever see you again?”

Epiphany (2018):

Epiphany, released as part of BTS’ Love Yourself: Answer album comeback trailer is a beautiful solo track emphasising self-love's importance. Jin's powerful declaration, “I’m the one I should love in this world,” has become an anthem for many on their journey to self-acceptance.

“Maybe I, I can never fly/I can't fly like the flower petals over there/Or as though I have wings, yeah/Maybe I, I can't touch the sky/Still, I want to stretch my hand out/I want to run, just a bit more”
