BTS RM aka Kim Namjoon, better known as RM, recently sparked a wave of speculation after fans noticed an unusual activity on his Instagram. On January 18, eagle-eyed fans discovered that RM had unfollowed all his BTS teammates, including the Instagram account of Jungkook’s pet dog, Bam. At the time, RM’s following list only included two accounts: BTS’ official page and another managed by his team. However, within a few hours, RM re-followed all the accounts he had unfollowed.

This brief change was enough to ignite a flurry of theories among fans, with many divided on the possible reasons behind the move. Some fans speculated that RM’s actions were a response to Jungkook’s earlier social media behaviour. The youngest BTS member had previously unfollowed all the BTS members and even the group’s official account from Bam’s Instagram page. Created in April 2024, Bam’s account became Jungkook’s way of staying connected with fans after deactivating his personal social media. However, fans noticed on January 8, 2025, that Bam’s account no longer followed any of the BTS members.

RM’s decision to unfollow Bam and the other members led to a divide among fans. Some blamed Jungkook for initiating the so-called “follow-unfollow drama,” while others criticized RM for escalating the situation.

The fandom’s opinions ranged widely. Some believed RM faced online backlash for unfollowing Bam and the members, prompting him to reverse his decision. Others suggested the incident might have been caused by an Instagram glitch. However, skeptics argued that someone as meticulous as RM would have immediately noticed and corrected such a glitch.

A section of fans theorized that RM’s actions were influenced by his artistic sensibilities. They speculated that RM, known for his love of aesthetics, might have wanted to reorder his following list for visual appeal.

The timing of Jungkook’s unfollowing everyone and RM’s subsequent actions fueled rumours of a rift within the group. Some fans went as far as to suggest that Jungkook might be planning to leave BTS. Critics of the group claimed that the “family-like bond” often highlighted by fans of OT7 (all seven members together) was merely a façade to maintain their fandom.

Amid the speculation, a significant number of fans expressed frustration over the attention given to the incident. They argued that the debate over following and unfollowing Instagram accounts was unnecessary and detracted from more meaningful discussions. Currently, RM, V, Jungkook, Jimin and Suga are completing their mandatory military service and the group is expected to reunite around June this year.
