In an interview with Hindustan Times, director Pa Ranjith talked about the plot of 'Thangalaan' and said, "It’s an interesting film that takes place during the colonial period. It’s set in the KGF gold mines and about the freedom the oppressed people, who worked in the mines, wanted. Was their leader able to fulfill their wishes? The story revolves around this."
Action choreographer Stunner Sam, in an interview with Galatta Plus, talked about the action sequence in 'Thangalaan'. He said, "Each one has a different variation. There are sequences in the fire, water, and across different landscapes. You won't witness any resemblances. There's one sequence where he (Vikram) performed while being surrounded by fire and is not something anybody else would do."
